Michal Macháček absolvoval doktorské studium na Ústavu českých dějin Filozofické fakulty Univerzity Karlovy a zahraniční pobyty na Filozofické fakultě Univerzity Komenského v Bratislavě, Historickém ústavu Slovenské akademie věd a Historické fakultě Moskevské státní univerzity M. V. Lomonosova. Zabývá se problematikou československo-sovětských vztahů a komunistického hnutí ve 20. století, přičemž se zaměřuje na jeho politické elity, zejména osobnost Gustava Husáka. Publikoval řadu odborných i popularizačních textů, přednáší a spolupracuje na filmové tvorbě s historickou tématikou.

Michal Macháček completed his doctoral studies at the Department of Czech History at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, Prague, and attended various internship programmes abroad – at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava, the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the Faculty of History at Lomonosov Moscow State University. His main interest lies in the Czechoslovak-Soviet relations and the 20th-century Communist movement, with a special focus on the political elites, especially on the personality of Gustav Husák. He has published a number of specialist and popularising texts and collaborates on the production of films and other works of art dealing with history.
